History
The Ilmin Cultural Foundation, a non-profit organization, was established in 1994 to honor Kim Sang-man (1910–1994), former president of The Dong-A Ilbo, a major South Korean newspaper. Kim dedicated his life to advancing Korean journalism and promoting Korean culture. In December 1996, the museum opened as Ilmin Art Hall with three exhibition rooms in the Dong-A Ilbo’s former headquarters, a building constructed in 1926. The collection draws from artworks acquired during Kim’s lifetime. Following a comprehensive one-year renovation, the museum reopened in February 2002 in its expanded, five-story form.
