History
The site’s retail history began in 1894 with the opening of the first Simpson’s store. That building burned down in 1895, clearing the way for a new structure. Burke and Horwood designed the replacement, which opened in 1896 as Robert Simpson’s flagship establishment.
The building remained the heart of the Simpsons chain until Hudson’s Bay Company acquired it in 1978. A major renovation converted it to The Bay’s flagship store in 1991. In 2014, the property was sold to Cadillac Fairview and formally integrated into the Toronto Eaton Centre, though the two buildings had been connected by skybridge since the 1970s. The store closed on June 1, 2025.
