Hotel Torni — “the Tower” — rises over the Kamppi district of central Helsinki. Opened in 1931, its fourteen storeys made it the tallest building in Finland, and it has spent nearly a century as a landmark of the young capital, from jazz-age glamour to Cold-War intrigue.
History
The hotel was designed by the architect brothers Bertel and Valter Jung in 1928 and opened on 19 March 1931 — a genuine stir, since a skyscraper in the city centre did not please everyone. Combining Art Deco and Functionalism and inspired by 1920s American towers, it became the tallest building in Finland, a title it held until 1976, and was the country’s first fully electrified building.
Its height made it a vantage point in troubled times. During the Winter War it filled with foreign journalists, and from 1944 to 1947 it housed the Soviet delegation of the Allied Control Commission, which watched over defeated Finland from its rooms. In 1951 the Ateljee Bar opened at the very top, offering both a panorama of the city and exhibition space for young artists.

At the summit, the Ateljee Bar is reached by a final narrow stair; its terrace gives one of the widest views over Helsinki and the sea.

Torni is where modern Helsinki first reached for the sky. Its layered history — architectural landmark, wartime press hotel, occupation headquarters, artists’ bar — makes it a compact record of twentieth-century Finland, standing above the streets that grew up around it.

The hotel is on Yrjönkatu, near Kamppi and the central railway station. The Ateljee Bar at the top is open to non-residents; take the lift, then the final stair.
