Hotel Magma

A Mission Revival hotel built in stages from reinforced concrete, adobe, and brick, now restored after two decades of closure.

At a glance

The Hotel Magma stands at 100-130 Main Street in Superior, Arizona, between North Magma Avenue and Magma Alley. It is not one building but three distinct structures erected at different moments, all designed in the Mission Revival style.

History

The first section, a two-storey reinforced concrete building at 100 Main Street, anchored the site. An adobe addition followed in 1916, but it collapsed in 2007.

In 1923, John Davey constructed a brick addition at 130 Main Street, labelled “Macpherson’s Hotel Magma.” The hotel closed in 1992.

It reopened after restoration and renovation in 2019.

What you see

The surviving complex shows the Mission Revival style across two main structures. The reinforced concrete core at 100 Main Street remains.

The 1923 brick addition by John Davey carries the name “Macpherson’s Hotel Magma” on its façade. The 1916 adobe wing is gone.

Cultural significance

The hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 under the name “Magma Hotel.”
