Hotel Europejski stands on Krakowskie Przedmieście, on Warsaw’s Royal Route between the Old Town and the palaces. Opened in 1857 to designs by Henryk Marconi, it is among the oldest luxury hotels in Poland and one of the capital’s defining nineteenth-century buildings, reborn in 2018 as Raffles Europejski Warsaw.
History
The hotel opened in 1857 as part of the renovation of Warsaw’s Royal Route. The Polish-Italian architect Henryk (Enrico) Marconi gave it a neo-Renaissance form, and his son Karol and nephew Ferrante added the lavish interiors. At its opening it counted among the most modern and luxurious hotels in Europe.
Guests came for the cooking of Józef Wysakowski, once chef to Queen Isabella of Spain, and the hotel’s glittering New Year’s balls were immortalised in Bolesław Prus’s novel The Doll (Lalka), a classic of Polish literature. Badly damaged in the Second World War and rebuilt, the Europejski reopened on 1 June 2018 as a Raffles hotel after a restoration by Boris Kudlička that wove modern luxury into the neoclassical shell.
What you see
Marconi’s neo-Renaissance façade — arcaded, symmetrical, richly detailed — anchors this stretch of the Royal Route opposite the Saxon Garden.
The 2018 restoration preserved the historic architecture while inserting a contemporary interior and a significant collection of Polish art.
Cultural significance
The Europejski is a survivor of nineteenth-century Warsaw and a fixture of its literature and social memory. Its place in The Doll alone ties it to the city’s self-image; its careful post-war rebuilding makes it a symbol of Warsaw’s own resilience.
