History
The first place of worship in Heinävesi was a small chapel erected in 1748. By 1840, a grander wooden “temple” church designed by Carl Ludvig Engel replaced it, but this ambitious structure burned down in 1887. Stenbäck’s replacement rose from the ashes just four years later, solidifying the site’s role as a spiritual centre for the region.

The church exemplifies Stenbäck’s characteristic Gothic Revival vocabulary, evident in its pointed arches and vertical emphasis. Two bells hang in the tower: a smaller bell cast in 1765 and a larger one from 1906. Johan Kortman painted the altar in 1893. The organ, originally crafted by Jens Zachariassen in 1906 with 25 stops, was substantially rebuilt by the Kangasala Organ Factory in 1981, incorporating 20 of the original stops and expanding to 33 stops total.
