The Grassi Theater occupies the transformed Teatrino of Palazzo Grassi, a Renaissance palace on the Grand Canal. Now part of François Pinault’s contemporary art collection, the theater presents a carefully curated program of projections, concerts and conferences.
History
In 1857, Baron Simeone De Sina acquired Palazzo Grassi and envisioned an ornamental garden with greenhouses, fountains and pergolas. By 1951, the International Center for Arts and Costumes established an open-air theater on the site. During the 1960s the space was covered to accommodate receptions, fashion shows and theatrical performances. The center closed in 1983, ending the theater’s original cultural mission.
Following Palazzo Grassi’s restoration in 2006 and Punta della Dogana in 2009, architect Tadao Ando redesigned the Teatrino in 2013 as the third phase of Pinault’s Venice project. The new auditorium opened with a refined program of contemporary performance and media art.
