History
The garden’s origins trace to the end of the 1300s, but the ensemble took its definitive form in 1570 under Agostino Giusti, a Knight of the Venetian Republic and Gentleman of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. The palace hosted the Philharmonic Academy for many years, which later relocated to establish the Philharmonic Theater. During the Second World War, the garden suffered significant damage; extensive restoration and replanting followed. The garden has undergone various modifications throughout its long existence, adapting to changing tastes while maintaining its essential character.

The palace displays the classical U-shaped plan typical of Renaissance architecture. The garden divides into distinct sections, with the western and eastern areas forming its most important zones. The oldest portion features geometric layout near water sources, enclosed by a row of cypress trees. A grotto surmounted by a decorative mask adds sculptural interest to the grounds. Most remarkable is the ancient Goethe cypress, over six hundred years old, which Wolfgang Goethe admired during his 1786 visit and later commemorated in his Journey to Italy (1817).
