Giomici Castle is a medieval fortification set in the wooded hills of Umbria, near Gubbio, rising above the Chiascio river valley at approximately 43.19° N, 12.61° E. The castle formed part of the network of defensive strongholds that controlled the roads and upland territory of the Gubbio district during the communal and signorial periods of central Italian history.

Overview
Giomici Castle stands on a forested hillside in the uplands east of Perugia, within the cultural landscape shaped by the medieval commune of Gubbio. Like many Umbrian hill fortifications, it served both a military function — controlling territory and road access — and a social one, anchoring the local feudal hierarchy. Its setting within dense Apennine woodland has helped preserve its fabric against urban encroachment.
History
The castle’s origins are rooted in the high medieval period, when the Gubbio commune and rival noble families competed for dominance over the surrounding countryside. Fortified towers and curtain walls were characteristic responses to the inter-communal conflicts of 12th- and 13th-century Umbria. Like comparable structures in the area, Giomici likely passed through multiple lordships before falling into disuse as centralised Papal States authority consolidated the region in the early modern period.

The surviving remains include stone perimeter walls and the remnants of a tower keep, consistent with Umbrian hill-castle typology. The site commands wide views over the Chiascio valley, making its strategic rationale immediately legible. The surrounding woodland has reclaimed much of the outer ward, giving the ruin a picturesque, layered quality typical of abandoned Apennine fortifications.

The nearest town with rail connections is Fossato di Vico on the Ancona–Foligno line, approximately 15 km south-east. No regular public bus service reaches the immediate vicinity; a private vehicle or organised tour is recommended.
