The Fencing School stood on this location during Gdańsk’s golden age as a Baltic trading hub. English players brought works of the Renaissance stage to the city’s audiences, establishing a cultural bridge between London and Poland. In the late 20th century, theatre director Jerzy Limon—founder of the Gdańsk Shakespeare Festival—envisioned restoring theatrical life to the historic site. His research into the original Fencing School revealed it was modelled on the Fortune Playhouse, the celebrated London venue designed by Peter Street.
