Garibaldi Theatre

A landmark entertainment venue on Vittoria’s main street, the Garibaldi Theatre began as an Art Nouveau cinema in 1913 and evolved into a modern multiplex, representing four generations of the Gambina family’s commitment to cinema.

At a glance

The Garibaldi Theatre stands as one of Vittoria’s cultural anchors, its history intertwined with the rise of cinema in Sicily. Built in the early twentieth century by knight Giuseppe Gambina, the venue has been continuously operated and expanded by his descendants, adapting to technological change while maintaining its role as a public gathering place.

History

Knight Giuseppe Gambina founded the original cinema in 1913, naming it after Garibaldi and designing it in the Art Nouveau style. His passion for cinema proved infectious; his daughter and son-in-law constructed the Barone Theatre in 1956, extending the family’s presence in entertainment. Sebastiano Gambina, Giuseppe’s son, designed and built Cinema Golden in 1970, followed five years later by the Golden Hall, a multipurpose space. In 2009, Cinema Golden underwent transformation into a digitized multiplex, modernizing operations amid broader challenges facing Italian cinemas. The family marked a century of continuous activity in 2013, with the third generation—Giuseppe Gambina, Sebastiano’s son—leading the organization and passing stewardship to the fourth generation.
