Galliate

Galliate is a historic comune in the Province of Novara, Piedmont, situated on the right bank of the Ticino river approximately 7 kilometres northeast of Novara and 40 kilometres from Milan. The town is dominated by the Castello Visconteo-Sforzesco, a late-medieval fortress built for the Visconti dynasty and later used by the Sforza lords of Milan as a ducal residence and hunting retreat. Its position on the Ticino, at the border between Piedmont and Lombardy, gave Galliate strategic importance throughout the medieval and early modern periods.

Overview

Galliate lies about 90 kilometres northeast of Turin and 40 kilometres northwest of Milan, in a fertile plain where the Ticino river marks the administrative boundary between Piedmont and Lombardy. The town’s fame rests largely on its Castello Visconteo-Sforzesco, one of the best-preserved Sforza-era residences in Piedmont, which served as a retreat for Ludovico Sforza (il Moro) and his court in the late 15th century. Today Galliate is a prosperous small industrial and commercial comune with a population of approximately 15,000.

History

The origins of Galliate as a fortified settlement date to the Lombard and Carolingian periods, but the present castle structure was substantially built in the late 13th and 14th centuries under Visconti lordship. Gian Galeazzo Visconti, first Duke of Milan, invested heavily in the castle as part of his programme of Lombard fortification, and subsequent Sforza rulers — particularly Ludovico Sforza, patron of Leonardo da Vinci — used it as a hunting residence and occasional court. The castle was modified for Renaissance residential use in the late 15th century, when it received its distinctive square plan with four angle towers. After the fall of Ludovico Sforza to the French in 1499, the castle passed through multiple hands and eventually became municipal property.

What you see

The Castello Visconteo-Sforzesco of Galliate presents a square plan with four cylindrical corner towers and a central courtyard, the standard Lombard late-medieval castle layout refined by the Visconti architects. The exterior brick construction is characteristic of the Po Plain building tradition, where local clay provided the primary building material. The castle’s interior has been restored and is used for cultural events and temporary exhibitions. The surrounding town retains its historic street plan, with the parish church of San Pietro al Rosario containing notable 15th-century frescoes and the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine della Rosata, an important local pilgrimage site.

Cultural significance

The Galliate castle is a tangible remnant of the Visconti-Sforza cultural and political dominion over northern Italy, a dynasty that patronized some of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance. Its association with Ludovico Sforza’s court places it in the same network of residences that included the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, Vigevano, and Pavia — sites that witnessed the activity of Leonardo da Vinci, Donato Bramante, and other Renaissance masters. The castle thus occupies a minor but genuine place in the material history of the Italian Renaissance.
