Gallery of Modern Art in Hradec Králové

An Art Nouveau palace turned regional gallery, showcasing Czech and international modern art within a meticulously restored early 20th-century landmark.

At a glance

A regional art museum housed in a 1912 Art Nouveau building originally designed as a financial institution. The gallery holds works spanning the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, with particular focus on Czech art. Significant sculptural and decorative programs enhance the architecture.

History

Built in 1912 according to designs by architect Osvald Polívka, the building initially served as the palace of the Credit–Saving Institute. Between 2014 and 2016, comprehensive reconstruction and modernization brought the space into service as a full contemporary gallery while preserving its historic fabric. Today it operates as a subsidiary organization of the Hradec Králové Region.

What you see

The building exemplifies Art Nouveau principles with sculptural embellishment throughout. Ladislav Šaloun created monumental bronze figures—Harvest and Trade—that flank the main entrance, while František Fabiánek executed three Atlant (male caryatid) figures that support the cornice. Original stained glass windows, stucco applications, and decorative details remain intact. Interior renovation preserved these artistic elements while creating modern exhibition galleries.

Cultural significance

The gallery represents a successful integration of heritage preservation with contemporary curatorial practice. Its architecture documents early 20th-century Czech prosperity and aesthetic ambition; its present mission reflects the region’s commitment to modern and contemporary art. The collection bridges European modernism with Czech artistic identity across three centuries.
