Galleria Spazia
A pioneering gallery in Bologna’s university quarter dedicated to Italian abstraction and avant-garde movements since its founding.
At a glance
Galleria Spazia occupies a vital position in Bologna’s contemporary art landscape, specializing in twentieth-century Italian abstraction. Located in Piazza Verdi at the heart of the university zone, the gallery has championed avant-garde artists for over four decades.
History
Founded in 1980 by Marco Bottai, Galleria Spazia opened with a landmark exhibition of Luigi Veronesi’s work, immediately signaling its commitment to Italian abstraction. The gallery’s early years witnessed major shows dedicated to Carla Accardi, Tancredi, Giuseppe Capogrossi, and Lucio Fontana. Its focus extended to members of FORMA I, the influential group centered on geometric and kinetic abstraction, including Giulio Turcato, Antonio Sanfilippo, Achille Perilli, and Piero Dorazio. Comprehensive retrospectives followed for Osvaldo Licini, Gastone Novelli, Salvatore Scarpitta, and Mario Nigro.
What you see
The gallery occupies a modest street-level space on Via dell’Inferno. Its intimate scale encourages close engagement with the abstract works it presents.
Cultural significance
Galleria Spazia has been instrumental in documenting and promoting Italian abstraction when such work remained underrepresented in mainstream discourse. By championing FORMA I artists and other non-figurative practitioners, the gallery contributed substantially to a more complete understanding of postwar Italian modernism beyond Futurism and Metaphysical painting.
