Overview
The Teatro Fraschini stands as a landmark of Lombard theatrical culture, preserving a Baroque interior that has survived largely intact since the 18th century. Named after the celebrated tenor Gaetano Fraschini, the theatre seats audiences within a classic horseshoe-shaped hall lined with tiered boxes. It continues to host a full programme of opera, drama, and music in the 21st century.
History
The theatre was constructed in the 1770s and officially inaugurated in 1773, making it one of the earliest surviving opera houses in Lombardy. It was commissioned to serve the civic and aristocratic audiences of Pavia, a university city with a long tradition of cultural patronage. The building was later named in honour of Gaetano Fraschini (1816–1887), a celebrated Italian tenor born in Pavia. Over subsequent centuries it underwent periodic restoration without losing its original architectural character.
What you see
Visitors enter an intimate horseshoe auditorium whose multiple tiers of boxes rise toward an ornate ceiling decorated with frescoes and gilded mouldings. The stage retains traditional fly-tower machinery, reflecting the technical requirements of 18th-century opera production. The facades of the theatre integrate harmoniously with the surrounding historic urban fabric of central Pavia.
Cultural significance
As one of the oldest continuously operating theatres in Lombardy, the Teatro Fraschini represents a living monument to Italian operatic heritage. Its preservation demonstrates Pavia’s sustained commitment to the performing arts across three centuries of political and social change.
