History
Billy Wilkerson, founder of The Hollywood Reporter, purchased the land in 1945 and proposed the resort. Early in 1946, he partnered with mobsters including Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel to secure financing. Siegel took control of the project and saw construction costs balloon from $1 million to $6 million.
The casino opened December 26, 1946, with a three-story hotel following on March 1, 1947. The Flamingo became the third resort to open on the Strip and remains the oldest continuously operating one. Siegel was killed by an unknown assailant in June 1947.
Hilton Hotels Corporation acquired the resort in the early 1970s, renaming it the Flamingo Hilton—a designation it retained until 2001. A major 28-story tower was completed in 1978, with additional high-rises finished through 1995. The original three-story hotel was demolished in 1993.
