History
The congregation was established in 1944 on Los Angeles’s Westside. In 1948, the church founded an associated elementary school which operated for seven decades before closing in 2018. A significant electrical fire destroyed the sanctuary in 1998, but restoration efforts renewed the building and sparked a cultural renaissance within the congregation.
What you see
The restored sanctuary features a pipe organ installed in 2004, designed by the same builder responsible for instruments at Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. The organ’s design prioritizes acoustic resonance, making the space ideal for musical performance. An exterior mural, Jesus Roller Skating with Friends in Venice Beach, created in 1997 by Benedictine monk Ft. Maur Van Doorslaer, reflects the congregation’s embrace of artistic expression.

In a neighborhood defined by creative energy, First Lutheran has positioned itself as an “art-friendly church.” Since 2001, the Masters in the Chapel music series has brought world-class performances to the sanctuary, featuring artists from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra, and Los Angeles Master Chorale. These programs explore the intersection of the divine and visual arts through music, readings, and collaborative performance.
