Ely Community Center

A Depression-era municipal building that blends Art Deco with Neoclassical restraint, the Ely Community Center stands as a testament to New Deal ambitions and civic purpose.

At a glance

Built in 1938 with Public Works Administration funding, this multipurpose facility originally housed the public library, auditorium, meeting rooms, offices, cafeteria, and public showers. Its architecture exemplifies PWA Moderne—a distinctive fusion of Art Deco vitality and classical formality that defined a generation of American civic buildings.

History

The Ely Community Center emerged from New Deal ambitions to provide both employment and lasting community benefit during economic crisis. Completed in 1938, it became the social and intellectual hub of Ely, housing the library and serving as a venue for gatherings, performances, and civic functions throughout the twentieth century. Community organizations maintained headquarters there into the 1990s. The building was vacated in 2014 when the library relocated to a new facility. In 2018, the Ely City Council voted to sell the structure to the K America Foundation for Korean cultural and heritage programs.

What you see

The building’s design merges Art Deco ornamentation with the restrained symmetry of Neoclassicism, a stylistic balance characteristic of PWA Moderne. This approach created a civic landmark that was both modern and reassuringly traditional—buildings designed to inspire public confidence during uncertain times. The open plan accommodated the library, cafeteria, auditorium, and administrative spaces in a functional yet dignified composition.

Cultural significance

The Ely Community Center represents a pivotal moment in American municipal architecture and New Deal philosophy. It demonstrates how federal investment in public works created infrastructure that served multiple functions and bound communities together. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, it is recognized for its architectural distinction and its role in local civic life, politics, and entertainment.
