History
Constructed between 1929 and 1932, Edificio La Nacional was originally the headquarters of La Compañía Nacional de Seguros (the National Insurance Company), which gave the building its name. It claimed the distinction of being Mexico’s first building to exceed 10 storeys, a landmark achievement in the nation’s architectural development.
The tower reigned as Mexico City’s tallest until Edificio Corcuera was completed in 1937. Despite its prominence, the building proved remarkably resilient: it survived both the devastating 1957 and 1985 earthquakes that struck the capital, sustaining only minor damage in the 2012 Oaxaca-Guerrero earthquake.

The Art Deco façade rises 13 storeys with a steel frame engineered to withstand the region’s seismic activity—a technical innovation crucial to Mexico City’s geology. Five elevators serve the 15,000 square-metre interior. The building occupies a commanding position directly across Avenida Juárez from Palacio de Bellas Artes, anchoring the historic centre’s modernist character.
An adjacent structure, “La Nacional II,” erected in 1949 as an annex, houses commercial space and a popular eighth-floor café offering views toward Palacio de Bellas Artes and Alameda Park.
