Overview

The Museo di Scienze della Terra of the Sapienza University of Rome brings together under one head the previously separate museums of geology, mineralogy and palaeontology. It stands on the university’s city campus in Rome, in Lazio.

History

Since 1804 the three museums have gathered and catalogued more than 34,000 mineralogical specimens, 3,000 geological and 7,000 palaeontological ones, together with books, maps and historic scientific instruments.

Many of the specimens are unique in Italy and in the world for their historical importance, their economic value or their rarity, and are studied and asked for both in Italy and abroad.

What you see

The new museum is planned to cover more than 4,100 square metres, taking in areas for temporary and permanent exhibitions, laboratories, offices, stores and services — bookshops, lavatories, disabled access and conference rooms.
