Dalen Hotel stands at the head of the Telemark Canal, in the village of Dalen in Tokke, Norway. Opened in 1894 in the Norwegian “Dragon Style”, it is one of the country’s most theatrical timber buildings — a storybook hotel that drew royalty in the golden age of Norwegian tourism.
History
The hotel owed its existence to the Telemark Canal, opened in 1892 and hailed as an “eighth wonder”, which turned Dalen into a hub on the fastest route between Oslo and Bergen. A group of Skien and Porsgrunn businessmen — Hans Larsen, Lars Rød and Anton Hansen — commissioned the architect Haldor Larsen Børve, trained in Trondheim and Hannover, to build a hotel worthy of the traffic.
The result, opened in 1894, was drawn from stave churches and Viking motifs: dragon heads on the gables, carved eaves, turrets and balconies. Royal guests soon followed — King Oscar II, Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany, King Leopold II of Belgium, and Norway’s own King Haakon VII and Queen Maud with the young Crown Prince Olav.

The building is a high-gabled timber fantasy: dragon heads projecting from the roofline, spires and pinnacles, balconies and elaborately carved woodwork in the National Romantic Dragestil.
It sits at the canal’s terminus, where the lake steamers still dock after climbing the locks up from the coast.

Dalen is the finest surviving hotel of Norway’s Dragon-Style moment, when a young nation reached back to its Viking and medieval past for a distinctive architecture. Tied to the “eighth wonder” of the Telemark Canal, it captures the romance of nineteenth-century travel into the Norwegian interior.
