Csokonai Theatre
Hungary’s oldest and largest theatre, a Moorish-styled monument to the nation’s dramatic traditions, opened in Debrecen in 1865 and named after the city’s greatest playwright.
At a glance
The Csokonai Theatre stands as Debrecen’s premier cultural venue and a landmark of 19th-century Hungarian architecture. Named in 1916 after Mihály Csokonai Vitéz, the early modern playwright who lived and worked in the city, it remains a working theatre and symbol of regional artistic life.
History
The theatre opened on Kossuth Lajos utca in 1865 with a performance of József Katona’s play Bánk bán, starring Róza Laborfalvi as Gertrude. The inaugural production established the house as a serious venue for Hungarian drama. Originally named after its location, the building was officially renamed the Csokonai Theatre in 1916 to honor Mihály Csokonai Vitéz, whose prolific career as a playwright and poet shaped modern Hungarian theatre.
The stage has hosted generations of celebrated Hungarian actors, from 19th-century stars like Lujza Blaha and Kornélia Prielle to 20th-century luminaries including Zoltán Latinovits and Géza Hofi.
What you see
Architect Antal Szkalnitzky designed the building with distinctive Moorish-styled ornamentations that distinguish it from contemporary European theatres. The interior is richly decorated throughout, reflecting the opulence expected of civic cultural institutions in the era.
Six bronze sculptures of Hungary’s literary giants adorn the exterior: Sándor PetÅ‘fi, Ferenc Kazinczy, Mihály Vörösmarty, Károly Kisfaludy, Ferenc Kölcsey, and Mihály Csokonai Vitéz himself. These figures represent the intellectual foundations of modern Hungarian culture.
Cultural significance
The Csokonai Theatre embodies Debrecen’s status as a major Hungarian cultural center beyond Budapest. Its namesake, Mihály Csokonai Vitéz, was among the first modern Hungarian playwrights, and the theatre’s founding in 1865 coincided with a period of theatrical renaissance in the nation. The house continues to anchor the city’s cultural identity and artistic programming.
