The Craiova Art Museum occupies the Constantin Mihail Palace, a masterpiece of early 20th-century French-influenced design. History
The palace was commissioned by Michael Constantine (1837–1908), a member of Romania’s wealthiest families, and designed by French architect Paul Gottereau. During its early decades as a private residence, it welcomed Romanian royalty and distinguished international guests—including exiled Polish president Ignacy Mościcki in 1939 and Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito. The building was converted into a museum in 1954 and designated a historic monument by Romania’s Ministry of Culture.

The palace interior displays extraordinary European craftsmanship. Carrara marble staircases rise beneath Murano glass chandeliers, while walls are lined with Lyon silk. Hand-painted ceilings and partly gilded stucco ornament the rooms, complemented by Venetian mirrors that amplify the sense of grandeur. The architectural vocabulary reflects the cosmopolitan tastes of its Belle Époque period.
Cultural significance
The museum’s Brâncuși gallery is internationally renowned, displaying six early works spanning the sculptor’s formative decade. Pieces including The Kiss and Miss Pogany reveal his evolution toward modernist abstraction. Beyond Brâncuși, the collection encompasses major Romanian painters—Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, and Ștefan Luchian—alongside traditional Romanian icons, creating a comprehensive narrative of national artistic achievement.
