The Commerce House is an Art Nouveau residential and business building anchoring Tampere Central Square. Its corner premises became a restaurant destination of unexpected historical significance—hosting Finland’s pioneering McDonald’s from 1984 onwards.
History
Completed in 1899, the Commerce House was designed by the Helsinki firm Andersin, Jung ja Bomanson—Bertel Jung, Waldemar Andersin and Oscar Bomanson. The building’s name derives from the French word commerce, reflecting its dual purpose as residence and commercial space.
The upper floors housed Hotel Central, established in 1907 and later renamed Hotel Centrum. The ground-floor corner space held the Ensimmäinen apteekki (“first pharmacy”) until 1983. That year marked a turning point: Finland’s first McDonald’s opened on 14 December 1984, following a brief Burger King tenure. A 2010 fire damaged the restaurant but it reopened in spring 2012. McDonald’s closed in autumn 2015, replaced by Friends & Brgrs in 2016.
