History
Spanish settlers relocated their capital to this location in 1527, having abandoned their previous base at Tecpán Guatemala when conditions became untenable. For fourteen years, Santiago de los Caballeros served as the administrative center of the colonial Guatemala region.
On an autumn day in 1541, a catastrophic lahar—a volcanic mudflow—descended from the adjacent Volcán de Agua. The disaster destroyed the city entirely. Governor Beatriz de la Cueva perished in the calamity. Survivors had no choice but to abandon the site permanently, eventually establishing a new capital at Antigua Guatemala.

Today Ciudad Vieja comprises ruins of the colonial settlement. The district is also known by its modern name, San Miguel Escobar, which encompasses the archaeological remains of the vanished capital.
