The Church of the Annunciation was built during the 1860s as part of Rev. Arthur Wagner’s ambitious programme of church construction in Brighton. Wagner, the son of Rev. Henry Michell Wagner (Vicar of Brighton from 1824 to 1870), initiated the project to serve residents of a newly developed area of modest housing in what became the Hanover district. The church reflected Victorian philanthropic concerns for pastoral care among the urban poor.
