History
The history of worship at this location spans more than 1,200 years. A Church of St Mary was founded in 669 within the remains of a Roman fort at Reculver, about 1.25 miles to the north-east. This medieval structure was mostly demolished in 1809. A replacement church was consecrated at Hillborough in 1813, but its poor construction necessitated rebuilding within decades. The present church was designed by Joseph Clarke and constructed between 1876 and 1878 as the second Hillborough structure.

Clarke’s design exemplifies the Gothic Revival style. The building incorporates materials salvaged from the demolished church at Reculver. Its baptismal font is probably from the medieval All Saints’ Church, Shuart, which once stood on the Isle of Thanet.
