Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva
The Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Spello is a remarkable example of religious continuity: a Roman temple dedicated to Minerva, built in the 1st century BC when Spello was the prosperous Roman municipality of Hispellum, later converted into a Christian church. The building preserves its ancient Roman pronaos — a portico of six Corinthian columns — largely intact on the facade, making it one of the most visible pieces of Roman architecture in Umbria and a compelling site for visitors interested in the long history of sacred space in central Italy.

Overview
Spello is one of the best-preserved Roman and medieval towns of Umbria, set on the lower slopes of Monte Subasio between Assisi and Foligno. Its ancient identity as Hispellum is preserved not only in inscriptions and archaeological fragments but in the living fabric of the town itself, most visibly in the six Roman columns of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. The church is an active place of worship as well as a heritage monument, visited both by pilgrims and by travellers drawn to Spello’s exceptional density of ancient and medieval monuments.
History
The original Roman temple was built in honour of the goddess Minerva during the Augustan era, when Hispellum was elevated to a Roman colony and benefited from significant imperial investment. The temple’s pronaos, with its six Corinthian columns rising from a podium, was the ceremonial entrance to the sacred precinct. At some point in the early Christian or medieval period, the cella of the temple was converted into a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a pattern common across the former Roman world.
The interior was substantially remodelled in the Baroque period, giving it the decorative character visible today, while the ancient Roman exterior was preserved — partly through inertia and partly through a growing antiquarian appreciation of classical remains.
What you see
The facade of Santa Maria sopra Minerva is dominated by six fluted Corinthian columns standing on a podium, the original pronaos of the Roman temple preserved with remarkable completeness. The triangular pediment above the columns, while partially modified, retains its ancient profile. Inside, the church interior presents a typically Umbrian Baroque decorative scheme with painted chapels and carved altars. The contrast between the ancient exterior and the Baroque interior encapsulates the layered religious and artistic history of the site across more than two millennia.
Cultural significance
Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Spello is a compelling example of the conversion of Roman sacred architecture into Christian use, a process that shaped much of the physical fabric of Italian historic towns. The preservation of the Roman pronaos gives the church outstanding archaeological value and makes it a landmark for understanding the Roman urban heritage of Umbria.
