History
A Romanesque single-nave basilica stood on the site in the 13th century. A Gothic replacement rose in 1345, then a larger three-nave church followed in 1399–1400.
Fire devastated the structure in the 15th century. Rebuilding added a vestibule and spire, reshaping the silhouette. The most dramatic intervention came between 1893 and 1900, when F. Schmoraz directed extensive reconstruction and expansion, elongating the tower by 64 meters. Archaeological discoveries emerged during 2007 repairs.

Both are now known to be 19th-century fabrications, yet they fueled nationalist scholarship and pride during a period of Czech cultural assertion.
