History
A place of worship has occupied this site for at least 500 years. The current structure was erected in 1857, replacing earlier buildings while preserving fragments of their past. Monk’s patronage ensured the church would serve the growing parish of Stapleton. The 2015 appeal to raise £250,000 reflected ongoing conservation needs, particularly to the tower and roof.
What you see
Norton’s design employs Gothic Revival principles with local Pennant stone from Broom Hill quarry and refined Bath Stone dressings. The interior comprises a five-bay nave and three-bay chancel. The spire rises dramatically to 171 feet, a landmark visible across the parish.
The font in the West porch dates from around 1000 AD. A second, ornate Victorian font with cover was imported from elsewhere. An organ by Vowles of Bristol was installed in the 1970s. The 1887 stained glass window by Kempe exemplifies High Victorian craftsmanship, as does a memorial window to Captain Gore-Langton, who fell at Waterloo.
