The seat of the Anglican Bishop of Chichester since 1075, this cathedral unites Norman and Gothic architecture with two features unique among England’s medieval cathedrals: a free-standing bell tower and double aisles.
At a glance
Chichester Cathedral is formally the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity. Its spire—the third tallest in England—is the only medieval cathedral spire visible from the sea, serving as a landmark for generations of travellers. The cathedral has been celebrated by architectural critic Ian Nairn as “the most typical English Cathedral.”
History
Founded in 1075, Chichester Cathedral was established when the episcopal seat moved from Selsey. The city of Chichester itself, though small, grew around the cathedral’s presence. Eighteenth-century writer Daniel Defoe observed that the city’s entire population could fit inside the cathedral at once, and that without a few families, there would be little society beyond the cathedral’s canons and dignitaries.
What you see
The cathedral displays fine architecture spanning Norman and Gothic periods. Its campanile (free-standing bell tower) and double aisles are architectural rarities among medieval English cathedrals. Inside, two rare medieval sculptures are displayed alongside significant modern commissions: tapestries, stained glass, and sculpture acquired during Dean Walter Hussey’s tenure (1955–1977).
Cultural significance
Chichester Cathedral represents a synthesis of medieval English cathedral design and twentieth-century artistic patronage. Hussey’s acquisitions brought contemporary art into a historic setting, creating dialogue between old and new. The cathedral’s spire remains one of England’s most recognizable ecclesiastical landmarks.
