Charyn National Park

A vast protected landscape spanning multiple districts of southeastern Kazakhstan, Charyn National Park preserves diverse ecosystems across more than 120,000 hectares of steppe and canyon terrain.

At a glance

Charyn National Park was established in 2004 to safeguard the natural heritage of the Almaty region. The park straddles Enbekshikazakh, Raiymbek, and Uygur districts, encompassing landscapes that range from open steppe to dramatic canyon formations. A significant territorial expansion in 2009 nearly doubled its protected area.

History

The park was created by Government Resolution No. 213 on February 23, 2004. Just five years later, Resolution No. 21 of February 6, 2009, enlarged the park’s boundaries, expanding its territory from approximately 93,150 hectares to over 127,050 hectares. This expansion reflected growing recognition of the ecological value of the region.

What you see

The park encompasses varied terrain characteristic of southeastern Kazakhstan. Visitors encounter open steppe landscapes interspersed with canyon systems, including the notable Charyn Canyon. The geological formations reflect millennia of erosion and natural processes.
