Central Institute for Graphics

A state institute housing one of Italy’s most significant collections of drawings, prints, matrices, and photographs, unified under one roof in the historic Palazzo Poli.

At a glance

The Central Institute for Graphics is a specialized museum and research facility dedicated to preserving and studying works on paper and related media. Its collections span thousands of drawings, prints, matrices, photographs, and artist videos, representing centuries of graphic arts practice in Italy.

History

The institute traces its origins to 1975, when the National Institute for Graphics was established through the merger of three important institutions: the National Chalcography (with pontifical heritage), and the National Prints and Drawings Department.

For decades, these collections remained scattered across separate locations. In 2008, a major milestone was achieved when the adjoining buildings of Palazzo Poli and the Chalcography were connected, allowing the distinct collections to be physically and administratively unified under one administration. The current name became official on 10 December 2014.

What you see

The institute occupies the historic Palazzo Poli complex, with galleries and storage spaces arranged across interconnected buildings. The arrangement allows visitors to experience both exhibition spaces and, in some cases, glimpses of the extensive curatorial and conservation work that sustains the collections.

Cultural significance

As a division of the Directorate-General for Fine Arts and Landscape, the Central Institute for Graphics serves as a custodian of Italian graphic heritage. Its collections document artistic practice from the Renaissance to contemporary times, making it essential for understanding printmaking, drawing traditions, and the evolution of reproductive and creative techniques in Italian art.
