Cathedral of St. Nicholas
The principal Roman Catholic cathedral of Bielsko-Biała, rebuilt in the early 20th century by a Viennese architect while the city remained under Austro-Hungarian rule.

History
Founded between 1443 and 1447, the church served the merchant community of medieval Bielsko. In the early 1900s, as the city industrialised under Austro-Hungarian administration, the building was almost completely reconstructed. Leopold Bauer, a prominent Viennese architect, designed the ambitious rebuilding project that transformed the structure into a modern Roman Catholic edifice. The stained-glass windows were contributed by another Viennese artist, Rudolf Harflinger. In 1992, four centuries after its foundation, the church received cathedral status.

The cathedral’s most prominent feature is its soaring tower, which rises 61 metres above the city and serves as a territorial landmark. The interior preserves the organ (III/51), a substantial instrument built by the Rieger-Kloss firm in 1915. Harflinger’s stained-glass windows constitute the principal artistic enrichment of the renovated interior, representing early 20th-century Viennese design.
