Designed by architect Joseph Cuypers and completed in 1930, the Cathedral of St Bavo stands as the principal cathedral for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam. It replaced a waterstaatskerk that had occupied the Jansstraat since the 16th century, when the original Sint-Bavokerk was lost to the Reformation.
History
The original Sint-Bavokerk served Haarlem’s Catholic faithful until 1578, when it was converted to Protestant use. For more than three centuries, Haarlem’s Catholics worshipped in a modest waterstaatskerk called St. Joseph on the Jansstraat. In 1895, construction began on a grand replacement designed by Cuypers, one of the Netherlands’ foremost ecclesiastical architects. The cathedral was completed in 1930.
