History
Religious life at this site spans nearly five centuries. The first church was founded in 1515, but the present structure was constructed in the early twentieth century to better serve the growing city. In 1818, the church was designated a cathedral, elevating its ecclesiastical status. Within its walls rest the remains of Alonso Fernández de Lugo, the Spanish conquistador who conquered Tenerife and founded San Cristóbal de La Laguna itself.
