History
The fortress was repeatedly besieged, destroyed, and rebuilt between the 12th and 15th centuries before major expansion in the 16th. For centuries it belonged to the lords of Villalta-Caporiacco and the Counts della Torre—a family that produced three Patriarchs of Aquileia. Conflicts with the Counts of Gorizia marked the medieval period, while the escapades of Count Lucio della Torre brought Venetian occupation under the Serenissima. Napoleonic forces under Marshal Bernadotte later occupied the castle; Austro-Hungarian command was established following the 1917 defeat at Caporetto.
