History
Established in 1935 by Ursula Barr Smith and Edward Hayward, Carrick Hill rose between 1937 and 1939 using salvaged materials from England’s Beaudesert Estate. The Haywards became discerning collectors and cultural patrons, filling the mansion with works by leading Australian and international artists and hosting frequent gatherings. In the 1970s, they bequeathed the property to the South Australian government. The estate opened publicly in 1985 and has since undergone strategic renovations—a 2020 Wall Gallery upgrade and a 2023 pavilion expansion—enhancing access while respecting its heritage character.

The mansion blends Elizabethan styling with 1930s modernist convenience, its interior arranged around period design elements and contemporary furnishings. Ursula’s formal gardens transition from Edwardian Arts and Crafts layouts near the house to woodland areas featuring terraces, planted walkways, and sculptural installations. Former stables now house the Australian Museum of Gardening.
Cultural significance
Carrick Hill preserves a major Australian art collection spanning painting, sculpture, and works on paper. It holds the largest private collection of Stanley Spencer paintings outside Britain, plus one of Australia’s biggest assemblages of Jacob Epstein bronze busts. The estate’s Australian artists—Streeton, Drysdale, Heysen, Dobell, Lambert, and Feint—document early-twentieth-century innovation. The Australian Museum of Gardening, developed with the Australian Garden History Society, documents 250 years of gardening practice through books, tools, and donated artefacts, recognised by Interpretation Australia in 2021.
