PANTELLERIA, SICILIA
Cantina Minardi

A family winery on Sicily’s volcanic island, producing Zibibbo wines using methods passed down since 1940.

At a glance

Cantina Minardi is Pantelleria’s oldest operating winery, among the rare producers to oversee every stage of production on the island itself. Located in contrada Karuscia near the sea, it combines traditional Pantellerian vinification with selective modern techniques.

History

Leonardo Minardi founded the winery in 1940, beginning a family tradition that has endured across three generations. His son Andrea continued the work, instilling the philosophy that winemaking is fundamentally a passion rather than mere commerce. Today, the family maintains the same dedication to quality and terroir that Leonardo and Andrea established over eight decades ago.

What you see

The winery occupies a simple structure in contrada Karuscia, positioned just a few hundred meters from the sea. Inside, modern equipment serves the time-honored practices of Pantellerian winemaking, allowing contemporary precision to enhance rather than supplant traditional methods. The dark volcanic soil surrounding the facility remains central to the grapes’ character.

Cultural significance

Cantina Minardi embodies Pantelleria’s winemaking heritage. The winery’s commitment to the Zibibbo grape—also known as Moscatellone—and to processing every wine on the island preserves authentic methods that define the region’s identity. Few producers maintain such vertical integration, making the winery a custodian of Pantellerian tradition and terroir.
