Caldara from Manziana

A natural monument where volcanic forces still shape the landscape—sulphurous springs and phreatic explosions mark the site of ongoing post-volcanic activity in the shadow of the Sabatino volcano.

At a glance

The Caldara from Manziana is a protected natural monument spanning 90 square kilometers in the province of Rome. Established by regional law in 1988, it sits at the southwestern edge of the Sabatino volcanic complex. The site remains under the stewardship of the Agricultural University of Manziana.

History

Designated a natural monument by regional law no. 64 on 26 September 1988, the Caldara was formally recognized for its geological and scientific significance. The site’s name derives from its resemblance to a caldaia—a cauldron of boiling water—an apt description of its most striking feature.

What you see

The landscape here is shaped by geothermal activity rather than human construction. In the central part of the Caldara, a spring issues forth, marked by visible phreatic explosions of sulphurous waters. These waters maintain a constant temperature of 27 degrees Celsius, a testament to subsurface heat.

Cultural significance

The Caldara represents a rare window into volcanic processes. The phenomenon results from rainwater percolating through soil layers until it contacts the still-incandescent magma below. This interaction creates steam, driving the characteristic explosions and mineral-rich thermal waters that make the site geologically exceptional.
