Burtnieki Castle
A ruined medieval fortress on the shores of Lake Burtnieks, built by the Livonian Order in the late 13th century.

History
Construction began around 1284 under Livonian Order Master Wilhelm von Schauerburg. The castle was positioned strategically on the south shore of Lake Burtnieks, anchoring the Order’s territorial control in the region. The fortress has since fallen into ruin, its structures dismantled or collapsed over centuries of abandonment and weathering.
What you see
The castle survives primarily as earthworks and fragmentary walls. Approximately 100 meters of the eastern curtain wall remain visible, its stones weathered by exposure. These sturdy sections once enclosed and defended the Order’s garrison; their current state reveals medieval construction techniques while underscoring the site’s vulnerability to decay.
Cultural significance
Burtnieki exemplifies the castle-building strategy of the Livonian Order, which used fortifications to establish Christian dominion over the Baltic lands. Though reduced to ruins, the site documents the medieval militarization of Vidzeme and the architectural legacy of the crusading order.
