Bastei
A 194-meter rock formation rising above the Elbe River, the Bastei commands panoramic views across Saxon Switzerland and has drawn visitors since the nineteenth century.
At a glance
The Bastei stands 305 meters above sea level near Rathen, southeast of Dresden. Its jagged rocks, sculpted by water erosion over a million years, create one of Germany’s most recognizable natural landmarks. A stone bridge connects the formations, allowing visitors to explore the summit on foot.
History
Tourism at the Bastei began in earnest during the nineteenth century. A wooden bridge was erected in 1824 to link the rocks and provide safe passage for visitors. This structure was replaced in 1851 by the Basteibrücke, a lasting stone bridge that remains in use today. The dramatic landscape attracted Romantic painters, most notably Caspar David Friedrich, whose painting “Felsenschlucht” captured the formation’s sublime character.
What you see
The Bastei comprises towering sandstone columns rising abruptly from the forested valley below. The nineteenth-century stone bridge arches between the rock formations, offering vertiginous views of the Elbe meanders. The jagged silhouette against the sky remains unchanged since the Romantic era—the same prospect that inspired Friedrich and generations of landscape painters.
Cultural significance
The Bastei serves as the primary vantage point within Saxon Switzerland national park. Its influence extends across borders: the site anchors a climbing and hiking network reaching into Bohemian Switzerland in the Czech Republic. For two centuries, the formation has symbolized the Romantic ideal of wilderness accessible yet austere.
