Overview

Calle dei Fabbri runs from the piazza towards Rialto and carries a great deal of foot traffic without ever widening. A La Campana works the way ostarie on that line work: fish bought at the Rialto market in the morning, a short menu, a room that fills at midday.

The house dates itself to 1990 and says fish has been its speciality for more than twenty years. That is its own account; no independent source carries a founding year, and the business does not appear in the regional register of historic places of commerce, for which it would in any case be too young.

History

There is a name that has to be kept separate from this one. An Osteria della Campana is documented in Venice from 1341, at San Matteo di Rialto in the sestiere of San Polo: Marin Sanudo held a stake in it and left it to his daughter in 1533, and it survived the great Rialto fire of 1514. That house closed after the fall of the Republic and its premises became private housing.

It is not this establishment, which is in another sestiere and opened in 1990. The two share a name and nothing else, and the medieval one is the reason to be careful with claims of antiquity here.
