Overview
The name means “the little anchovy”, and it is a bacaro in the proper sense: a counter where wine is served by the glass and eaten standing, with small things to go with it. It stands in Castello, off the campo of Santi Filippo e Giacomo, close enough to Piazza San Marco to be convenient and far enough to keep its own crowd.
Gianni Bonaccorsi, originally from Ferrara, has run it since 1978, and it is from that year that its documented history begins. The establishment also tells an older story about itself — a bacaro founded in the early years of the twentieth century, famous in the 1950s for wine by the glass and anchovy rolls — which is its own account and is not attested elsewhere.
History
What can be followed is the line from 1978 onward: Bonaccorsi took on the bacaro and kept its counter tradition while turning the anchovy roll into the small anchovy pizza that has become the house signature.
In 2006 the family opened a second address nearby, Il Ridotto, where his son Nicolò now cooks. The two together are a good illustration of how a Venetian counter can become a kitchen without ceasing to be a counter.
What you see
Two rooms: a bar at the front where the cichéti are laid out along the counter and people stand, and a dining room behind for those who sit. The rhythm changes through the day — morning coffee, an early evening crowd for wine, later a restaurant.
