History
The museum takes its name from the intense air battles of December 1972, when Operation Linebacker II brought sustained American bombing to Hanoi. North Vietnamese air defense crews, equipped with Soviet-supplied surface-to-air missiles and conventional anti-aircraft weapons, successfully defended the city against one of the most advanced aircraft in the world.
The conflict marked a turning point in the war’s final chapter. The museum’s opening reflects how this moment remains central to Vietnamese national memory and identity.
What you see
The main exhibition building presents the history of the Vietnamese revolution, the First Indochina War, the Vietnam War, and the three major bombing campaigns: Rolling Thunder, Linebacker, and Linebacker II. Displays trace the development and deployment of Hanoi’s air defenses.
Outdoor exhibits feature the wreckage of a Boeing B-52D or G Stratofortress, shot down during Operation Linebacker II, alongside authentic air defense equipment. Nearby Huu Tiep Lake, approximately 300 meters north, contains the undercarriage section of another B-52, recovered and preserved as a memorial.
