Aula Palatina
A monumental Roman palace basilica built in the early fourth century, the Aula Palatina houses the largest surviving hall from classical antiquity and stands as a masterpiece of imperial Roman architecture.

Constructed between 300 and 310 AD under Constantius Chlorus and Constantine the Great, the Aula Palatina served as the throne room of the Roman palace at Trier. Today it functions as the Church of the Redeemer, operated by the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland. Its vast interior—67 meters long, 26 meters wide, and 33 meters high—remains unmatched among surviving structures from the classical world.
History
The basilica was erected during the reign of Constantius Chlorus and his successor Constantine the Great, when Trier served as an imperial capital of the Roman Empire. Built as the ceremonial heart of the imperial palace complex, it exemplified the power and architectural ambitions of the tetrarchy. Following the decline of Roman authority, the building was repurposed for Christian worship, eventually becoming a Protestant church during the Reformation.
