Founded in 1940 by the Kamarupa Anusandhan Samiti (Assam Research Society), the museum was established under the direction of Kanaklal Barua, who served as its founding president. The institution remained under private stewardship until 1953, when the Assam State Government assumed full responsibility for its administration and development.
