The Alpe di Siusi is a sprawling high-altitude pastureland covering 52 square kilometres in the western Dolomites. Situated between 1,680 and 2,350 metres above sea level, it serves as Europe’s largest alp—an area dedicated to traditional grazing and hay production. The plateau is bounded by Val Gardena to the north, the Sassolungo Group to the north-east, and the distinctive Sciliar massif to the south-east.
History
The Alpe di Siusi has functioned as a working pasture for centuries, with farmers utilising the vast meadows for livestock grazing and haymaking. The land remains divided into numerous plots serving the agricultural communities of the valleys below, preserving centuries-old pastoral traditions in the heart of the Dolomites.

This is a landscape of open meadows and mountain vistas rather than built structures. From the plateau, a complete panoramic sweep reveals the Sass de Putia (2,873 m), the Odle and Puez Group (3,025 m), the Sella Group (3,152 m), the Sassolungo (3,181 m) and Sassopiatto (2,995 m), the Marmolada (3,343 m), the Catinaccio group (2,981 m), and the Sciliar (2,450 m). Additional mountain groups visible include the Seceda and the Gran Cir. The Sciliar’s unmistakable profile stands as one of the Dolomites’ most recognisable symbols.
