Tradition holds that the first church on this site was founded by Ethelfleda in 915, anchoring Christian worship in Runcorn for over a millennium. The medieval church that probably succeeded it around 1250 was enlarged during the 14th and 15th centuries, accumulating a collection of monuments to local families, particularly the Brookes of nearby Norton Priory.
By the 19th century, the medieval building’s fabric had deteriorated beyond safe repair. The current church rose between 1847 and 1849 to designs by architect Anthony Salvin, incorporating salvaged furnishings and memorials from its predecessor.
