History
Ẓafār rose to prominence as a major port for frankincense commerce following the decline of the nearby harbor at Khor Rori. The city’s strategic location and reputation attracted renowned travelers across centuries: Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta, Ibn al-Mujawir, and the Chinese admiral Zheng He all visited its markets and streets.
The city entered a period of decline during the 16th and 17th centuries, hastened by multiple pressures. The closure of Khawr al Balīd—which had functioned as a bay connecting the settlement to maritime trade—severed its commercial lifeline. Simultaneously, Portuguese, Turkish, and Mamluk incursions destabilized the region, contributing to Ẓafār’s gradual abandonment.
